KSB Opens Branch Office in Ostrava

Law firm Kocián Šolc Balaštík, named several times by international rating agencies as a leading Czech law firm, opened a new branch office in Ostrava on 1 March 2009. The opening of KSB’s Ostrava branch office is an expression of KSB’s focus on satisfying the needs of its large corporate clients from the Moravia region.

As at opening, the team of KSB’s Ostrava branch office consists of three attorneys and administrative staff. JUDr. Petra Nováková, Ph.D., who formerly served as legal services director for OKD, a.s., the largest Czech black coal mining company, manages the office.

KSB’s Ostrava branch office will provide full-range legal advisory services focused on commercial law, having regard to the specific requirements of business entities operating in the Moravia region. Attorneys from the Ostrava branch office are experts in the law of commercial companies, the law of obligations, insolvency law, litigation, real estate law and labour law. The Ostrava branch office is also able to provide legal consultancy in a number of other fields (such as competition law, restructuring, mergers and acquisitions and complete tax advisory) thanks to the extensive specialisation of attorneys and tax advisers working at KSB’s other offices. KSB can also offer experience to its clients in the field of regulated markets, in particular the energy sector, transportation and telecommunications and in the pharmaceutical, food and consumer goods industries.

“The opening of our Ostrava branch office corresponds with our strategy to offer high levels of client care and to be available to clients close to their places of business, and it is also a response to signals indicating the growing demand for sophisticated legal services in the region,” said JUDr. Dagmar Dubecká, Ph.D., a KSB partner, who is responsible for the Ostrava branch office.

The Ostrava branch office was opened simultaneously with the closing of KSB’s branch office in Brussels, a move on which KSB’s partners agreed in summer 2008. The Brussels branch office was opened prior to the Czech Republic’s accession to the EU, and thus became the first branch of a Czech law firm in Brussels. In the opinion of KSB’s partners, the main goal of the branch, providing KSB’s clients with a physical presence and knowledge of the Brussels environment in the period prior to and following accession, was fully achieved, appropriate experience was obtained and strong contacts were created in the local business community (in particular in the field of advisory services) as well as in European institutions.
